Memories in the Summer - Whitney Hanrahan

Summer is finally here! Mouthwatering aromas coming from the grill, baseball games, lazy days, fun at the lake, and most important, time with our families. At least that’s how it should be, but many of us get swept up in the hectic schedules we create. It’s not intentional, but sometimes we neglect those memory making moments.

Often as parents we forget that we only have 18 years before our kids leave the nest, every year will fly by faster than that last one, whether we are ready or not.

Summer break is the perfect opportunity to be present and soak in all of those moments that really matter. The time we have together as a family is our most valuable gift we can give to our children. Whether the family time is spent on a road trip, eating good food, or trying something different. Summer is for taking a break to focus on what is really important.

Be Spontaneous….

One important element for memory making is the ability to be spontaneous, however that is somewhat hard for me, since I like our household to be extremely organized. But, some of our most meaningful memories have come along by accident.

This summer my husband and I plan on making as many unforgettable memories with our children as possible. Since he was injured in Afghanistan we try to make every day count and this summer will be no different. We can’t wait for movie marathons, sharing stories, fishing, and discovering new places.

Thanks to the Heroes Thanking Heroes Program I am able to work from home which makes my job extremely flexible. I am still able to be a full time caregiver to my husband, and continue to make memories with my family that will be cherished for years to come.

Make the most of your summer with your family. If you can, take a trip, visit a park, have a picnic, listen to live music, and be around the people that mean the most. The time spent investing in your family bond is priceless.

Summer is here and summer is for making memories!
